I love this photo! Shall I describe all the details I like about it?
First, the reflections in the water lapping up over your skin are fantastic, and make a great entry into the composition. They also comprise slightly less than half of the bottom third, which keeps that bottom third from seeming too static. Of course, the turquoise, ribboning water behind you also keeps that bottom third interesting.
Plus, and this is HUGE, the line of your lips perfectly matches the horizon line of the lake. There's something extremely satisfying about that fact.
The orange ball adds interest and ties back into the color of your lips. Your direct gaze holds my attention. Your eyes almost seem like openings to the sky at first glance.
We have to blow this up and put it on the wall!!! I could actually see this as being behind the couch in the living room.
Wow. Laura, you saw even more in this composition than I did initially. This to me is the amazing aspect of photography, or a poem, or a short story, or any creative act... namely someone else other than the original creator bringing their own experiential perspective to the composition. I love your comparison of the buoy and my lips. it's perfect and I didn't consciously catch this when selecting this image. I also love that you caught the symmetry of my lips and the horizon line, which is one of my favorite aspects of this photograph.
I have had a fascination with photography for as long as I can remember. My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic. In 1987, I purchased my first Nikon SLR, an FE2. I currently use a Nikon D80 digital SLR, a Nikon F100 SLR, and a Polaroid One600 instant camera. After a long hiatus, I am back in the photographic mindset. I'm currently considering M.F.A. (Photography) programs in the Chicago area. My interests lie primarily in portraiture, especially against the backdrop of open landscapes. I am seeking to push my photographic/artistic boundaries, individually and in collaboration with others.
